Iddya Karunasagar, Prof.
Iddya Karunasagar is currently Senior Director, International Relations, Nitte University, Mangalore, India. He worked previously as Senior Fishery Officer in Food and Agriculture Organisation of United Nations at Rome for close to a decade and worked closely with Codex Alimentarius Commission, the joint FAO-WHO standard setting body for food safety. He led several Joint FAO/WHO Expert Consultations that led to risk assessments and provided scientific advice for standard setting by the Codex Alimentarius Commission.
He served as Lead Technical Officer for several food safety related projects in Asia, Africa, middle east and east Europe. Before joining FAO, he was the Director of Research at Veterinary University in India and National Professor of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. His research areas include viral and bacterial pathogens in aquaculture, molecular diagnostics and biotechnologies for health management in aquaculture. He has six patents and three commercialised technologies in these areas.
He obtained his masters and PhD degrees in Microbiology in India and carried out postdoctoral research at University of Maryland, USA, University of Wurzburg, Germany, Natural Resources Institute, UK and University of Sendai, Japan.
