Biography

Alain Vanderplasschen is full professor and head of the laboratory of Immunology-Vaccinology at the faculty of veterinary medicine of the University of Liège (Belgium). He graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 1991, then completed in 1995 a PhD thesis untitled “In vitro study of the interactions between Bovine herpesvirus 4 and bovine cells”. Dr Vanderplasschen then moved to Oxford University (UK) to work on poxviruses in the lab of Prof. G.L. Smith. He compared the binding and the entry of the two infectious particles produced by vaccinia virus as well as their sensitivity to neutralization by complement and antibodies.

In 2000, Dr Vanderplasschen was appointed head of the Immunology-Vaccinology laboratory (University of Liège, Belgium). Ever since, he has been developing a group devoted to the study of host‑pathogen interactions with a special interest for herpesviruses.

In 2007, he initiated researches on the prototypic member of the Alloherpesviridae family, the Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (CyHV-3) infecting common and koi carp. He is the author of more than 140 publications listed in PubMed and the inventors of six patents.

Recently, he received the prestigious scientific “GSK vaccines” award for his work on the development of a live attenuated recombinant vaccine against CyHV-3.
